ISHS Acta Horticulturae 175: Symposium on Physiology of Productivity of Subtropical and Tropical Tree Fruits

AN OBSERVATION ON SHOOT PROMOTION ON CHEMICALLY PRUNED KIWIFRUIT VINES

Authors:   R.F. Henzell, M.R. Briscoe
Abstract:
As part of a programme involving the chemical pruning of kiwifruit, petrolatum, Shell pruning paste, lanolin, polyvinylalcohol, and agar were evaluated as hormone carriers by testing them alone and in combination with NAA at 1 and 10% concentrations. The effects of the carriers alone are mainly described in this paper. Application of NAA to the pruned stems of about 10% of the laterals on vines in early summer reduced the subsequent shoot initiation from axillary buds on the rest of the vine. The water insoluble greases, particularly petrolatum and Shell pruning paste, promoted shoot initiation from the dormant buds immediately below the treated cut. This effect appears to be related to a retention of moisture in the pruned stem rather than the presence of a chemical growth stimulant.
