ISHS Acta Horticulturae 175: Symposium on Physiology of Productivity of Subtropical and Tropical Tree Fruits

INTEGRATION OF PHYSIOLOGICAL INFORMATION TO EVALUATE FRUIT TREE PRODUCTIVITY

Author:   J.J. Landsberg
Abstract:
This paper presents the outline of a generalized model of the production cycle of fruit trees. The model provides a framework for integrating information about the physiological processes that contribute to the cycle. Each of the main processes involved can be described by a sub-model; these sub-models are combined in the overall model. Although the physiology of most tropical and sub-tropical trees is not well understood the main processes involved in fruit production are, in all species, bud morphogenesis, flowering, pollination and fruit formation and fruit growth. Fruitlet loss and the factors affecting it are also important in most cases. These processes can be studied in isolation at various levels, from cell division to phenological observations, from photosynthesis as a process of CO2 uptake to fruit growth measured in terms of fruit number and size. These studies provide the physiological information which, integrated in the overall model, allow evaluation of fruit tree productivity, under various conditions.
