Abstract:
A proper understanding of the thermal behaviour of greenhouses demands that the various heat fluxes be quantified for given climatic conditions.
It is then possible to determine the rate at which heat is being gained or lost.
The result of such an analysis is that four phases in a typical 24 hour period can be described accurately.
These phases are (a) the greenhouse heats up from its night time set point temperature to its day time set point temperature (b) the greenhouse maintains its set point day time temperature by ventilation, cooling, or the delivery of excess energy to a thermal store (c) the greenhouse cools down to its night time set point temperature (d) the greenhouse maintains its night time set point temperature with heat supplied from external sources of energy and/or the thermal store.
