EFFECTS OF LIGHT INTERCEPTION AND SUPPLEMENTARY LIGHT ON THE GROWTH OF YOUNG CUCUMBER PLANTS

Authors:   S.A. Tooze, D. Klapwijk
Abstract:
The experimental setup for studying the effect of light on growth in a greenhouse is described. The effect of light interception and light supplement during different seasons was studied on greenhouse cucumber plants in the exponential growth phase. The relative growth rate curves for fresh and dry weight and leaf area were similar with light saturation occurring at 3.5 MJ.m -2. day-1. The averaged daily light totals increased from winter to summer by a factor 10, while the RGR values increased by a factor 2.3. This is mainly due to the effect of light on the specific leaf weight which was three times greater in the summer than in the winter. The type of treatment used (shading or artificial lighting) did not alter the results.
