ISHS Acta Horticulturae 174: Symposium Greenhouse Climate and its Control

DISCUSSION POSTERGROUP C: GROWTH PROCESSES AND MODELLING OF CROP GROWTH

Authors:   R.W. Langhans, J.V.M. Vogelezang
Abstract:
The discussion included the most outstanding points from each poster and the lead-off talk by Prof. H. Krug. Problems and difficulties related to modelling of crop growth were put forward for discussion.

We have to be aware of the differences between growth models of canopies and single plants. Working in growth chambers with single plants has a statistic advantage in that every plant can be a replica. However, practice, plants are grown as canopies.

The response times for light and temperature are different, due to the different processes they influence. Generally light has a short and temperature a long response time. Temperature and light not only affect the growth rate of plants, but also have important morphological effects. In the future, more emphasis should be laid on the morphological processes and its modelling, so it can be integrated in growth models.
