FINITE ELEMENT ANALYSIS OF TEMPERATURES IN A BOTTOM-HEATED NURSERY CONTAINER

Authors:   X. Yang, L.D. Albright
Abstract:
A two-dimensional model is developed to describe steady-state heat transfer through a round nursery container subjected to bottom heating. The linear heat conduction equation with linear and nonlinear boundary conditions is employed.

Comparisons of experimental data with predictions using the model indicate the model is accurate to within 1 K. The model is used to investigate the influence on root zone temperatures of various parameters such as thermal properties and the boundary conditions. A strategy to control root zone temperature is proposed.
