ISHS Acta Horticulturae 174: Symposium Greenhouse Climate and its Control

A SIMPLE METHOD TO CALCULATE IMPROVEMENTS OF DIFFUSE LIGHT DISTRIBUTION IN DETACHED GREENHOUSE.

Author:   Marius G. Amsen
Abstract:
Lining the northern wall with a reflecting film in detached greenhouses does not change the light conditions in dull weather as compared to transparent films.

This result is supported by a simple mathematical model, based upon the assumption that diffuse radiation is radiation coming from all directions and of the same intensity. Lining with highly reflecting materials such as aluminium coated films or solid screens of polystyren will in sunny weather improve the light intensity close to the wall. When artificial light is applied at night the effect will be improved due to a better light distribution close to the wall. The author suggests that lining with transparent films is abandonned in greenhouses and replaced by reflecting material.
