| Abstract:
Plant production is proportional to water use. When water supply reduces transpiration below potential transpiration, plant photosynthesis and hence biomass production decreases. This relationship leads to the widely accepted point of view that maximum crop production is obtained by minimizing the plant water deficit throughout the development of the crop. The factors overlooked by this rationale are that farmers do not usually harvest the entire crop, and maximum biomass production does not necessarily lead to maximum harvested crop. | |
