ISHS Acta Horticulturae 172: Composts as Horticultural Substrates

EFFECTS OF ADDITIVES TO PEAT ON THE AIR AND WATER CAPACITY

Author:   G.C.S. Wilson
Abstract:
The effect of producing peat by "milling" rather than "block cutting" lowers the air capacity by raising the water capacity of the peat. The effect of adding lime, gel, gypsum and fine sand, all also lower the air capacity of the peats. The addition of a wetting agent increases the air capacity of peat by lowering the surface tension thereby helping the drainage.

A simple method is also described of finding the air and water capacity of young sphagnum peats using size distribution of the peat particles.
