Abstract:
In 1982 our laboratory set up an extended inquiry among the Flemish industry.
The aim was to get an idea of the industrial waste products which are available for use in composts.
The main characteristic we looked for was the organic content of the waste materials.
The responding on the inquiry was rather precarious depending on the different industrial sectors.
The percentage of answers was nowhere high but the number of answers was large enough to have a good idea of the kind of wastes produced in each sector.
With all the information we received it was possible to draw some conclusions.
Most of the valuable wastes which can be used in composts have already found another outlet.
The more pure and organic the waste is, the more it may be used for other aims.
In such a case the use for composts is normally of minor interest compared with the other possibilities of recycling.
This study gives only an idea of the materials which may be composted.
If one decides to use one of these wastes then a complete study of the characteristics and the possibilities of the material must be made.
