ISHS Acta Horticulturae 172: Composts as Horticultural Substrates

AGRONOMIC VALORIZATION OF MUNICIPAL WASTE COMPOSTS.

Authors:   M. BAUDUIN, R. IMPENS
Abstract:
Since a few years, several municipal waste composting plants are working in the Southern part of Belgium.

Our laboratory, devoted to heavy metals transfer studies, has been choosed for the assessment of the qualities of the new produced composts. Valorization in agriculture, horticulture and forestry of these products and the control of the quality of the composts are the goals.

Since 1983, we are performing trials on :

  1. the agronomic value of the urban composts
  2. the heavy metals accumulation and transfer to soils and crops
  3. the characterization of the stage of maturity.

Our paper reports the effects of urban compost "IDELUX" (x) on the yields of various crops (spinach, rye grass, corn and potatoes) and on the heavy metals contaminations of several types of soils.
