Abstract:
Chilling requirements of 30 sweet cherry cultivars (P.avium) varied during 3 winter periods between 733 to 1343 h below 7°C and 1101 to 1482 chilling units (CU). The dates of leaf bud break (1984) in the field were directly related to chilling requirements.
In 34 clones of interspecific cherry hybrids of P.avium, P.cerasus, P.fruticosa, P.canescens, P.concinna, P.subhirtella, and P.hillieri chilling requirement in winter 1982/83 varied from 1051 to 1889 h below 7°C and from 1375 to 1841 CU, respectively.
Clones with high chilling requirement tended to have late bud break and vice versa.
