Abstract:
After peeling away the bark, we studied the xylem of trunks at the graft-union of 92 sweet cherry trees, 6/8 years after planting/grafting.
The scion cultivar 'Hedelfinger' was grafted onto 39 rootstock clones of 13 interspecific crosses.
Xylem defects in the form of pits were observed at the transition zone between rootstock and scion, and in some cases gummy exudates and short woody roots were found.
There was a significant correlation between the degree of swelling of the scion trunk above the graft union and the number of pits per cm girth.
In transverse-sections, 4 of 13 selected trunks had formed irregular annual ring development.
The annual increments of xylem ring areas revealed differences in growth rates of rootstock and scion trunks.
