ISHS Acta Horticulturae 169: International Workshop on Improvement of Sweet and Sour Cherry Varieties and Rootstocks

SWELLING OF SCION TRUNK ABOVE GRAFT UNIONS OF CHERRY TREES

Authors:   H. Wagner, W. Gruppe
Abstract:
The swellings above the graft-union of sweet cherry trees cv. 'Hedelfinger' grafted on 79 clonal rootstocks from 13 interspecific crosses was studied. There was a negative, non linear correlation between cross sectional area of rootstock trunks and the extent of swelling of scion trunks just above the union. Some rootstock genotypes induced strong swelling (and sometimes overgrowth) while others from the same interspecific cross allowed evenly shaped trunks to form. A good correlation was found between the cross sectional area of the rootstock trunks and those of the scion cultivar trunks measured more than 20 cm above graft union.
