ISHS Acta Horticulturae 169: International Workshop on Improvement of Sweet and Sour Cherry Varieties and Rootstocks

GENETIC DIFFERENCES IN SUCKERING OF CHERRY HYBRIDS (PRUNUS X SPP.)

Authors:   S. Franken-Bembenek, W. Gruppe
Abstract:
Among 2464 interspecific cherry hybrids (Prunus x spp) and open pollinations (Prunus spp.) suckering was most severe in progenies with P.cerasus and P.fruticosa as parents. In interspecific progenies with three P.cerasus cultivars, a similar level of suckering was observed. A correlation of r = 0.30 was calculated between the number of suckers formed by 114 clones of ungrafted hybrids, and cherry trees of cv. 'Hedelfinger' grafted onto these hybrids. We can assume that a rootstock of a non-suckering progeny in the ungrafted condition will produce no or only few suckers when grafted with a scion cultivar.
