ISHS Acta Horticulturae 169: International Workshop on Improvement of Sweet and Sour Cherry Varieties and Rootstocks

GROWTH RELATIONSHIPS OF UNGRAFTED AND GRAFTED HYBRID CHERRY ROOTSTOCKS

Authors:   S. Franken-Bembenek, W. Gruppe
Abstract:
Total vegetative growth and growth components of ungrafted cherry hybrids were compared to the vigour of trees grafted with cv 'Hedelfinger'. There was no correlation between crown fresh weights after the 8th to 10th season of the ungrafted rootstocks, and after the 6th season of trees of cv 'Hedelfinger' grafted on these rootstocks. Correlations between canopy size after the 3rd and after the 8th to 10th season, lengths and diameters of 1-, 2- and 3-year-old shoots and numbers of side shoots of ungrafted rootstocks, and canopy size of cv 'Hedelfinger' grafted on these rootstocks were significant. However, differences were not great enough for selection of improved rootstocks.
