Abstract:
Details are given and discussed of the experimental designs used in preliminary field trials with sweet cherries (Prunus avium) for evaluating the orchard behaviour of cherry rootstocks of interspecific cherry hybrids grafted with test cultivars.
Included are techniques for recording the following attributes of the rootstock-cultivar combinations in the field: vigour of trees (size control), precocity, productivity, fruit quality, phenology, graft-union attributes, graft-incompatibility and mortality of trees.
After 6 years in the orchard a first selection of clones for advanced trials is feasable.
Preliminary trials continue for 10 years after planting.
