Abstract:
Prunus tenella Batsch or dwarf russian almond, is a low shrub 1 m 1,5 m high.
Branchlets are glabrous.
Leaves are lanceolate to oblong-obovate 3–7 cm long, acute, cuneate serrate, glabrous, light green and prominently veined beneath.
Flowers are 1–3 per bud, rosired, 1–2 cm across, sessile.
Fruits are avoid about 2 cm long, pubescent; stone is broadly ovoid and rugose.
P. tenella is diploid: x = 8, 2n = 16.
It is an ornamental plant, drought and lime resistant.
It suckers freely.
Very few informations exist about the use of P. tenella in fruit-growing:
- Micurin has obtained a hybrid between (P. tenella x P. davidiana) x P. persica (2),
- it has been tried as intergraft between Victoria or Czar plum varieties and P. cerasifera, P. insititia as rootstocks giving a compatible graft combination.
Moreover it has been discovered to be immune to the typical form of Microcerasus plum pox (3).
- It has been tried as rootstock for of Emperor Francis cherry variety, but on the seventh year after grafting variety separated from the rootstock (1).
