Abstract:
Fruit production in European socialist countries is a matter of social concern and is developed according to plans determined by reasons of health and national economy.
Cherry production is now at about 1 mill. tons and will be increased further; the proportion of sour cherries is approx. 60 percent.
Sweet cherries are mainly grown in foothill areas.
Sour cherries do not require particular locations.
Breeding of varieties and rootstocks and selection work are being carried out in all countries with differing intensity and objectives.
