Abstract:
Sour cherries are an important crop in West German fruit production.
Market production plus production of hobby fruit growers and from house gardens amount to about 120 000 tons.
This amounts to 180 Mill DM on the wholesale market.
The increasing economic value of sour cherry production during the last years strengthens the importance of choosing the right variety.
Criteria for choice of sour cherry varieties:
The criteria for choice of variety are:
- blossoming date
- growth character
- picking date
- yielding ability
- fruit character
Variation within varieties
Varieties of dark sour cherries seem to have a pronounced tendency for genetical variation within existing varieties.
This refers to "Schattenmorelle", of which 80 – 90 % of German sour cherry production are existing, and to "Heimanns Rubinweichsel", which is being grown only in dry climates because of its susceptibility to bacterial infection (Pseudomonas mors prunorum). For this reason continious selection and variety testing has to be maintained.
