ISHS Acta Horticulturae 169: International Workshop on Improvement of Sweet and Sour Cherry Varieties and Rootstocks

GENETIC DIFFERENCES FOR SPRING FLORAL BUD DEVELOPMENT AMONG SOUR CHERRY CULTIVARS

Author:   A.F. Iezzoni
Abstract:
Nineteen sour cherry (Prunus cerasus L.) cultivars were examined with the objective of identifying late blooming cultivars which would have an increased probability of avoiding spring frost. Sixteen of the 19 cultivars examined had a similar phenological development to 'Montmorency'. Three cultivars, 'Cerise Magnifique de Sceaux', 'Meteor', and 'Fructbare von Michurin' reached the balloon stage 2, 4, and 11 days respectively later than 'Montmorency'. Likewise 'Cerise Magnifique de Sceaux' and 'Meteor' reached bloom 2 days after 'Montmorency' and 'Fructbare von Michurin' bloomed 9 days after 'Montmorency'.
