ISHS Acta Horticulturae 169: International Workshop on Improvement of Sweet and Sour Cherry Varieties and Rootstocks

MORPHOGENESIS OF BOUQUET SPURS IN THE BRANCHING SYSTEM OF SWEET CHERRIES

Author:   S. Kramer
Abstract:
The length of shoots has a lower effect on the diameter of bouquet spurs and the number of inflorescences than the angle of branches to the vertical. As age increases, dwarfing growth will reduce the reproductive tendency of bouquet spurs as well as bad light exposure and poor nutrition. On variety-rootstock combinations of dwarfing growth fruiting branches should be pruned for rejuvenating. 28 sweet cherry varieties were classified into 4 groups according to the formation of bouquet spurs. Dwarfing sweet cherry trees will give sufficient yields only if there is an optimum of branchings. It is suggested that, on an international level, experts should agree on a few testing varieties for testing new rootstocks and thus promoting speedy introduction.
