Abstract:
Differential thermal analysis (DTA) was used to investigate the freezing of tissue water in buds and twigs of 23 Picea species.
Obtained results shown that the freezing injuries of shoot primordia of winter buds and of twigs have been caused by crystalization of supercooled tissue water of a homogeneous nucleation temperature.
Supercooling of water in the primordium shoots appeared to be related directly to the intactness of bud scales and crown.
Visual injury determination and measurement of K+ions efflux from bud and twig tissue revealed injury to appear near the freezing point of the deep supercooled tissue water.
Ability to avoid freezing injury by deep supercooling of tissue water, appears to be an important resistance mechanism in Picea species.
