ISHS Acta Horticulturae 168: II Symposium on Winter Hardiness in Woody Perennials

WINTER HARDINESS RESEARCH IN NORTH AMERICA ON WOODY PERENNIALS

Author:   H.A. Quamme
Abstract:
Winter injury is one of the most important limitations to growth of woody perennials in North America. Presently, over 23 scientists in Canada and 80 in United States work, to some degree, on research and development programs which involve the winter hardiness problem in woody plants. The work includes the increase in winter hardiness through breeding, improvement of management practices to maximize winter hardiness, site selection, and plant protection by heating, covering or environmental modification. Working groups, such as the IHSH Working group on Winter Hardiness of Woody Perennials can play an important role in promoting scientific cooperation and information exchange between winter hardiness researchers of North America and other parts of the world.
