ISHS Acta Horticulturae 168: II Symposium on Winter Hardiness in Woody Perennials

FREEZING RESISTANT GERMPLASMS OF BROAD LEAVED EVERGREEN WOODY PLANTS IN EASTERN CHINA

Authors:   S.A. He, Z.J. Sun, H.C. Bi, Y. Gu
Abstract:
Screening for freezing resistant germplasms of broad leaved evergreen woody plants in China is of higher potentiality than other places in the world. By means of investigations on the natural distribution, experiments of plant introduction and freezing tests 143 taxa of plants have been studied. Five species, Cyclobalanopsis gracilis, Cinnamomum japonicum, Ilex latifolia, Osmanthus heterophyllus and Ligustrum vulgare, were hardiest ones among 56 taxa of ornamental trees tested. Two selections in citrus have been found to be more hardy and worthy of extending in northern subtropical region. The presumable natural hybrid 'Taishun pink' was the hardiest cultivar in camellias and other three cultivars of Camellia oleifera were also considerable hardy. Four of 30 olive cultivars appeared hardier than the rest. Techniques of freezing test were discussed.
