Abstract:
In Denmark there is a preference for producing many pot crops to a height of 20–25 cm measured from the pot rim.
With the available commercial growth-retardants it is impossible in warm summer periods to produce high-quality dwarfed pot plants of Beloperone guttata 'Nørgaard'. Two experiments show that the new growth retardant paclobutrazol (PP 333) can restrict extension growth in warm periods of July and August.
One foliar spray with ethephon, 400 mg/l, followed by either 2 foliar sprays with paclobutrazol, 40mg/l, or 3 foliar sprays with 20 mg/l restrict extension growth sufficiently at a time of year when the growth is vigorous.
However, 80 mg paclobutrazol/l sprayed once after the ethephon foliar spray was slightly less than adequate. 160 mg/l results in crinkled leaves and indented edge in some leaves.
It is suggested that an extra spray with paclobutrazol can substitute the ethephon foliar spray.
