TREATMENT OF RARELY CULTIVATED POT-PLANTS WITH GROWTH REGULATORS

Author:   W.-U.v. Hentig
Abstract:
During the past years especially in countries with high production and consume of ornamental plants as well as in countries with increasing export efforts have been made to alter and extend the assortment of pot-plants by varieties less known or unknown so far. This aimes at presenting a more interesting offer and increasing the sales figures. These efforts are supported in Denmark, The Netherlands, Sweden, Israel and other countries and also in the Federal Republic of Germany by research in various institutes or especially founded working groups. The new plants are being tested systematically with respect to their characteristics and reactions. This includes treatment with retardants to influence the vegetative growth, flower formation, development of flowers, for an increase in marketing qualities and for regulation of selling times.

It is reported on new results with inhibitor treatments on 10 so far scarcely known plants of different origin, different appearance and for different uses: Anisodontea capensis, Brachycome multifida, Eustoma russelianum, Hypoestes phyllostachya, Jacobinia pauciflora, Mimulus-Hybrids, Pavonia multiflora, Pelargonium-Grandiflorum-Hybrids "Pansy"-group, Schizanthus-Wisetonensis-Hybrids, Seemannia latifolia.
