ISHS Acta Horticulturae 167: II Symposium on Growth Regulators in Floriculture

THE EFFECT OF DIFFERENT AUXINS ON TULIP STALK ELONGATION

Authors:   L. Banasik, M. Saniewski
Abstract:
Comparison was made of the polarity of action of IAA with synthetic auxins NAA, 2,4-D, and IBA /indole butyric acid/ on the growth of tulip stalks when the auxins were applied to different internodes. All leaves and the flower bud were excised when the shoot was about 6 cm long and auxins were applied to the top of the stem to the middle of the highest, third, and second internodes, and to the upper part of the first /basal/ internode.

All auxins induced stem growth when they were applied to the top of the stem. Application of IAA and NAA to the middle of the internodes promoted the growth of the stem only in the basipetal direction. Similar applications of 2,4-D and IBA promoted the growth of the stem both in basipetal and acropetal directions. Possible explanations of such different action of IAA and NAA in comparison with 2,4-D and IBA on growth of tulip stalk are discussed.
