Abstract:
Cut flowers taking up a solution containing a supply of sugar generally have a much greater longevity than flowers in water.
Removal of gynoecia does not appreciably affect longevity of flowers without supplemental sucrose, but gynoecium excision greatly reduces the longevity of flowers fed a solution containing sucrose.
The ovary, and not the styles, appears to be responsible for the longevity of sucrose-fed flowers.
Life of intact flowers is also shortened by excision of gynoecia.
It is suggested that control of senescence by the ovary is directed through the action of endogenous plant growth regulators, but their relationship with sucrose is unknown.
