ISHS Acta Horticulturae 167: II Symposium on Growth Regulators in Floriculture

IMPROVING THE SPRAY FORMATION OF POMPON CULTIVARS WITH GIBBERELLIC ACID AND INTERCALATED LONG DAYS

Authors:   Anton M. Kofranek, K. E. Cockshull
Abstract:
Peduncle lengths vary with chrysanthemum cultivars. In the United States those cultivars having long peduncles are the desired pompon types. Cultivars Beauregard, Flame Belair, Hurricane, Pinocchio and Statesman that normally have short peduncles were treated by intercalating the short days with long days after inflorescences were not fully developed in the apical region. Generally, those plants given 11 or 16 SD before intercalating 10 LD resulted in longer peduncle lengths than plants receiving the usual SD continuously. There were, however some malformations in individual inflorescences or in the spray formation when treated at the earlier date. There was a delay in flowering approximately equal to the interrupted 10 LD.

Twenty parts per million of GA3 sprayed on the apical region on the 21 or 28 SD resulted in an elongation of the peduncles without inflorescence abnormalities or delay in flowering.
