Abstract:
In the micropropagation of juvenile Pinus radiata D. Don, excised embryos produce both "waxy" and "wet" shoots.
Most of the adventitious shoots produced are of the "wet" phenotype.
Tubular epicuticular wax is a feature of "waxy" shoots but this is not present on "wet" shoots.
During rooting, "waxy" shoots survive better than "wet" shoots when placed in a peat/pumice/perlite mix, though both types root well after initial losses cease.
Plantlets produced from "wet" shoots are not as sturdy as those produced from "waxy" shoots.
