PROMISING BLUEBERRY CULTIVARS FOR COMMERCIAL GROWING IN ROMANIA

Author:   Gh. Badescu
Abstract:
The highbush blueberry has been recently introduced in Romania. The first cultivars of German and American origin were planted in 1968.

The availability of a large number of cultivars and their spread are due to the precocity, productivity, fruit quality, characteristics which meet the aims both of growers and consumers.

The blueberry plant is suitable for the acid soils and cold, hilly areas of our country. This being another reason for its extension (Badescu, Gh., 1973, 1977, 1981, 1984: Everett, M. F. H., 1966: Liebster, G., 1966: Roach, A. F., 1966).

On the basis of the results obtained in field trials at Bilcesti, the first 50-ha blueberry plantings were established using stock produced in Romania. The National Programme for Small Fruits envisages a further planting of 1200 ha more.
