Abstract:
The performances of 14 cultivars in foothill conditions in Northern Italy were compared.
A first field was planted in 1963 with "Atlantic", "Berkeley", "Concord", "Dixi", "Earliblue", "Stanley"; the second in 1964 with "Bluecrop", "Blueray", "Coville", "Herbert", "Jersey"; the third in 1967 with "Berkeley", "Bluecrop", "Blueray", "Collins", "Darrow", "Coville", "Herbert", "Bluetta".
The highest producers in decreasing order are "Berkeley", "Coville", "Blueray", "Bluecrop", "Darrow", with fruits of very good quality.
The poorest yields were those of "Concord" and "Collins".
The best berry size is observed in "Darrow", "Blueray", "Herbert", and "Coville", but also in these cultivars it is widely variable with the fruit load and with water supply during ripening.
Despite the age, the crop in the latest two years was higher than in the past, probably for the more suitable pruning technique and for the drip irrigation system.
Also the pruning wood is increasing, showing the good health conditions of this high density orchard.
