WEED MATTING MULCH FOR BLUEBERRIES

Author:   R.W. Bell
Abstract:
The low chill blueberry industry on the north coast of N.S.W. and in southern Queensland is only 3 years old yet a significant weed problem has already developed. Weeds producing rhizomes, and collonizing newly ploughed areas, make pre-emergent herbicides of limited value. Due to the high rainfall and undulating topography, clean cultivation is avoided because of erosion.

A long life, woven polypropylene matting strip has been successful in controlling weeds and making management more efficient. It has provided its own problems to management in ensuring water and fertiliser penetration, and in developing suitable planting and maintenance techniques.

An irrigation system initially using 1.5 mm trickle tube for 3 years, then switching the tubes to mini-sprinklers, has been designed to also allow for fertiliser application on a regular basis.

Maintenance and weed control costs have been reduced substantially under this system. The product is relatively new, with the oldest plantings being only 3 years. There is no apparent deterioration of the matting to date, and the manufacturers expect a life span for the cloth in excess of 5 years.
