Abstract:
A planting of eight named cultivars: Earliblue, Collins, Blueray, Bluecrop, Berkeley, Rubel, Jersey and Coville, and 56 seedlings selections was initiated in 1964 at Grand Junction, Michigan adjacent to the Michigan Blueberry Growers Association office and warehouse.
The plant material was supplied by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Michigan State University Experiment Station (MES). The purpose of the planting was to observe and obtain data on yield, size, quality, time of harvest and adaptability of the selections to Michigan's climatic conditions.
Seven of the original selections: Bluetta, Spartan, Bluejay, Northland, Darrow, Lateblue and Elliott, have been named and released to the industry.
Data has been maintained on only nine of the most productive or hardy selections.
The balance of the selections have been removed in preparation for new plantings.
