ISHS Acta Horticulturae 164: VI International Symposium on Virus Diseases of Ornamental Plants

DETECTION AND IDENTIFICATION OF VIRUSES IN HYDRANGEA

Authors:   T.C. Allen, J.P. McMorran, R.H. Lawson
Abstract:
In 1973 Renate Koenig listed six viruses that infected Hydrangea macrophylla; hydrangea ringspot, tomato ringspot, tobacco ringspot, tobacco necrosis, cucumber mosaic and alfalfa mosaic viruses. Bioassay, electron microscopy and serology were used to identify viruses in hydrangeas in the United States. Only one of the six listed viruses was detected, hydrangea ringspot virus. However, two additional viruses were identified, tomato spotted wilt and a potential carlavirus. The influence of these two viruses on our choice of detection procedures is discussed.
