Abstract:
A disease with symptoms of stunting, shoot proliferation, poor flower set and flower distortion afflicts carnations in Tuscany, Central Italy.
Viruses, mycoplasma-like organisms (MLO) and viroids were considered as possible agents.
Viruses were excluded because plants with specific symptoms were either virus-free or infected with common carnation viruses present also in plants lacking these symptoms.
MLO were observed in affected plants, but in very low concentrations; they could not be graft-transmitted to carnation and other plants, and tetracycline treatment did not ameliorate the symptoms.
Using PAGE under denaturing conditions, a viroid-like RNA, not present in healthy plants, was detected in carnations with symptoms and in previously healthy carnations grafted with diseased scions.
