ISHS Acta Horticulturae 164: VI International Symposium on Virus Diseases of Ornamental Plants

IDENTIFICATION OF BEAN YELLOW MOSAIC VIRUS IN MASDEVALLIA

Authors:   D.-E. Lesemann, R. Koenig
Abstract:
Plants of more than 20 species of Masdevallia imported from USA to Germany showed chlorotic streak mosaic on young leaves and surface irregularities on older leaves. Plants showing these symptoms, but also symptomless plants from the same nursery contained filamentous virus particles 789 nm long, which could be mechanically transmitted to a number of test plants including Nicotiana clevelandii and Vicia faba which were infected systemically. A screening for serological reactions using antisera to potyviruses revealed a strong decoration with antiserum to bean yellow mosaic virus (BYMV) and only weak reactions with antisera to five other potyviruses. Particles could also be efficiently trapped using antiserum to BYMV in immunosorbent electron microscopy (ISEM) tests. Slide precipitin tests and ELISA revealed no difference between our isolate and a typical isolate of BYMV from broad bean in Germany. However, test plant reactions of the two isolates differed sligthly. This is the second report on BYMV in orchids. In view of the wide occurrence of BYMV in other plants and its damaging role in Masdevallia, the potential danger of aphid infestations also for other orchids should be recognized.
