NEPOVIRUSES ISOLATED FROM GLADIOLUS IN ITALY

Authors:   M.G. Bellardi, F. Marani
Abstract:
Three hundred imported gladiolus bulbs, belonging to 35 cvs, were indexed for virus infection. 90% was infected with bean yellow mosaic virus (BYMV) and 35% with cucumber mosaic virus (CMV). At the same time two nepoviruses have been identified: tobacco ringspot virus (TRSV) and arabis mosaic virus (ArMV).

TRSV was serologically identified and isolated from gladioli with stunted growth, chlorotic mottle and rusty streaks on the leaves and colour breaks on the flowers. This is the first report of TRSV in Italy.

ArMV was frequently observed: twelve isolates were found and infection percentage was 4%. Two isolates were obtained from gladioli with mild mosaic symptoms and were scarcely infective. The other 10 isolates, associated with other viruses in gladioli showing marked symptoms, seemed to be similar to arabis type strain. ArMV hadn't previously been found in gladioli.
