ISHS Acta Horticulturae 164: VI International Symposium on Virus Diseases of Ornamental Plants

RHABDOVIRUS-LIKE PARTICLES IN HIBISCUS ROSA - SINENSIS L

Authors:   B. Plavšic, D. Milicic, Z. Eric
Abstract:
Some investigators in the past years found three shrubs which were infected with rhabdovirus-like particles in Yugoslavia. All infected shrubs were associated with vein yellowing symptoms. These shrubs were Pittosporum tobira (Thunb.) Ait., Euonymus japonica Thunb. and Laburnum anagyroides Med.

Pittosporum vein yellowing disease was first found by Plavišic-Banjac et al. (1976). The rhabdovirus which was the cause of this disease was mechanically isolated by Rana and Di Franco (1979) and was transported to herbaceous plants belonging to the family of Solanaceae.

The second rhabdovirus-like agent was found in E. japonica. It was first studied by Jonsson (1974) in a plant with fasciated stem. Later Pleše and Eric (1980) investigated this or a similar agent in E. japonica with normal habitus and vein yellowing symptoms. They found that this virus was 300 nm long and 70 nm wide.

The third Yugoslav agent with rhabdovirus-like particles was found by Pleše (1979) in L. anagyroides with vein yellowing symptoms and was first studied by Schultz and Harrap (1975). This last virus was also associated with vein yellowing symptoms.

Therefore, it seems that rhabdovirus-like particles of shrubs are often associated with vein yellowing symptoms.

The first author of this paper, hoping to find in H. rosa - sinensis with vein yellowing symptoms interesting viruses, gathered young twigs with such symptoms during her short stay abroad.
