Abstract:
Virus quarantine problems in connection with international transport of ornamental plant material are considered mainly in regard to non-European countries because active exchanges between West European countries over the last 20 years have led to rather a uniform distribution of virus diseases of ornamental plants.
Western Europe imports ornamentals from many countries all over the world, mainly Israel, Colombia, the United States, Thailand, South Africa, Kenya, Singapore, Japan, Guatemala, Ivory Coast, Brazil, Costa Rica and Honduras.
The whole range of ornamental plants or parts of living plants is here examined and the botanical families considered to have important quarantine problems are discussed.
These families are: Amaryllidaceae, Araceae, Caryophyllaceae, Compositae, Euphorbiaceae, Geraniaceae, Iridaceae, Liliaceae, Orchidaceae, Palmae, Rosaceae, Solanaceae and Ulmaceae.
Particular attention is given to the Rosaceae due both to the existence of enigmatic diseases such as rose wilt and the importance that virus diseases have for rosaceous fruit trees.
