ISHS Acta Horticulturae 164: VI International Symposium on Virus Diseases of Ornamental Plants

ASPECTS OF MICROPROPAGATION AND DISEASE INDEXING OF ORNAMENTALS

Authors:   K.L. Giles, S.C. Worfolk
Abstract:
The process of micropropagation is reviewed in a step by step description. The potential advantages of the system are described as are one or two notes of caution. The main advantages are the potential for rapid propagation of varieties in surroundings shielded from environmental stress and pathogens. This allows for the rapid bulking-up of valuable or elite germplasm and eases quarantine acceptability of material produced in order that rapid international dissemination of material can be achieved. The use of micropropagation programs for the establishment of high health stock plants through disease indexing and virus elimination techniques is discussed. One example is given where a combination of micropropagation, disease indexing and virus and viroid screening has been established on a commercial basis.
