ISHS Acta Horticulturae 163: Symposium on Quality of Vegetables

USE OF OIL CONTAMINATED WATER FOR IRRIGATION OF VEGETABLES

Authors:   A.R. Persson, G. Lieblein
Abstract:
The report deals with use of oilcontaminated water for irrigation of vegetables. The investigation is related to transport of irrigation water by oil tankers when returning to the oil exporting areas. - The growth and yield of various vegetables were not significantly reduced when using relatively high concentration of crude oil in the irrigation water. The chemical analysis of the vegetables deals with hydrocarbons which may represent a health hazard. Treated plants contained in general higher amount of polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) than untreated, and they had their specificity with regard to the absorbtion of the compounds. The total amounts of analysed PAH in the products may not represent a health hazard.
