NITRATE CONTENTS OF HEAD LETTUCE AS INFLUENCED BY NITRIFICIDES

Author:   F. Venter
Abstract:
Two years' experiments with three successively following head lettuce cultures were carried out under glass and in the open field to investigate the nitrate contents of plants as affected by nitrificides applied as one single dose before planting of the first culture. The nitrificides added to 80 kg N/ha in the form of ammonium sulphate were DCD (7.5 g/m2), N-serve (5 ml/m2), or terrazole (50 ml/m2); the variables were compared with a calcium nitrate treatment of 80 kg N/ha. The results achieved for all of the three compounds neither were clear nor were they cogent. Though also not very clear, the best effect was observed for N-serve.
