ISHS Acta Horticulturae 163: Symposium on Quality of Vegetables

THE EFFECT OF LIGHT SOURCE AND IRRADIATION ON THE CONTENT OF L-ASCORBIC ACID IN LETTUCE

Author:   S.O. Grimstad
Abstract:
The lettuce varieties 'Nordia' and 'Ostinata' were subjected to three lamp types (warm-white fluorescent tubes, high pressure metal halide, and high pressure sodium lamps) and three irradiance levels at different natural light conditions in the winter. Plants irradiated with fluorescent tubes had the lowest and plants irradiated with high pressure sodium lamps the highest content of ascorbic acid. Increasing irradiance generally raised the content of ascorbic acid. At natural light only, the control plants had a higher content in experiments carried out in spring than during the winter. A significant interaction was found between irradiance and light quality. Plants grown under fluorescent lamps responded stronger to increased irradiance than plants grown under the two other lamp types. The ascorbic acid content was significantly higher in 'Nordia' than in 'Ostinata'.
