KEEPING QUALITY OF TOMATO FRUIT AS AFFECTED BY HARVEST METHODS AND TRANSPORT CONDITIONS |

| Abstract:
The effect of mechanical and manual harvest of field grown tomatoes on the keeping quality of the fruit, were studied both in simulated and actual shipment to Europe (by air). Also, fruit grown in unheated glasshouses was hand picked and its keeping quality was studied both in simulated and actual shipments to Europe (by sea). Airfreighted fruit reached the market in Europe at a very good general condition. Later, it became evident that manually harvested fruit kept better than mechanically harvested fruit. The quality of the more susceptible varieties was degraded faster when handling and storage temperatures were not optimal, during the experimental sea shipment. However, some of the varieties can be transported by sea and still retain their high quality. | |
