THE EFFECT OF NITROGEN OXIDES (NOX) DURING CO2 ENRICHMENT ON SOME GREENHOUSE PLANTS

Abstract:
Ten "greenhouse" plants have been tested with respect to the effect of CO2 enrichment and nitrogen oxides (NOx) on growth and flowering.
The enrichment period lasted from 18 to 121 days depending on the species.
Rising the CO2 concentration from 330 to 1000 vpm increased the dry weight in all species with 20–74 %. NOx (0.7 ppm NO + 0.15 ppm NO2) reduced the dry weight of tomatoes, roses and Saintpaulia ionantha with 18–32 %. No significant effect of NOx was found on the other species.
CO2 enrichment promoted flowering in Saintpaulia ionantha while NOx delayed it.
NOx caused more blind shoots in roses.
NOx caused no visible injuries on the plants.
It is concluded that at levels which prevail in greenhouses NOx may have negative effects on some plant species.
