ISHS Acta Horticulturae 162: Symposium on CO2 Enrichment

EFFECTS OF HIGH CO2-CONCENTRATIONS ON VEGETABLES

Authors:   B. Pfeufer, H. Krug
Abstract:
Knowledge on the effects of high CO2-concentration on plants is scanty and in some cases contradictory. Therefore experiments have been performed in growth chambers on the effects of CO2-concentrations from 0,5 to 3,0 % (pure bottle gas) on growth rate, disorders and stomata resistance.

Critical concentrations for cool season vegetables under optimal growing conditions vary from more than 0,5 to 3,0 %, depending on the species. The reactions of the species to growth rate, morphogenesis and disorders are described. Plants with an unbalanced water status were more sensitive and showed reactions at much lower CO2-concentrations. The results indicate, that the action of CO2 on the regulatory ability of the stomata is one of the factors causing CO2-disorders.
