Abstract:
In agriculture, research on plant responses to CO2 can be divided into two categories: open field, or external atmospheric studies, and controlled environments, such as greenhouses and plant growth chambers studies.
In external atmospheric studies of CO2, the United States' scientific community is divided on certain issues.
The major issue is whether or not atmospheric CO2 levels are going to increase significantly in the next 50-100 years.
The secondary issue is whether or not higher levels of atmospheric CO2 will be beneficial to all plants.
The controversies have stimulated new research on the effects of high concentrations of CO2 on climate and plant physiology.
Controlled environment research on CO2 can also be divided: studies on effects of CO2 enrichment, and those on the effects of CO2 depletion.
While both areas are of great importance to research and the profitability of commercial horticultural crop production, little has been done in the area of CO2 depletion.
