ISHS Acta Horticulturae 162: Symposium on CO2 Enrichment

EFFECTS OF CO2 CONCENTRATION ON GROWTH OF GLASSHOUSE CUCUMBER

Authors:   G. Heij, J.A.M. van Uffelen
Abstract:
Glasshouse cucumber cv 'Corona' was planted twice, on 15 December 1982 and 27 January 1983 under six CO2 concentrations. Two CO2 concentration values were maintained below 340 ppm, and four values were kept above ambient up till 2800 ppm. The CO2 concentrations were controlled during daytime from one hour before sunrise until half an hour before sunset.

During the experiment the night/day temperature setpoints in the six compartments were 18/22° C.

Data on harvested fruit in relation to CO2 concentration are shown. Saturation of CO2 effects on harvest rates is found near 1000 ppm irrespective of light conditions.

The increase of the production caused by every increase of the CO2 concentration by 50 ppm is given from 100 till 400 ppm CO2.
